The Sibley County Board, during its regular meeting on Tuesday morning, June 23, approved the FEMA required 2015 Sibley County All-Hazard Mitigation Plan.  The plan must be updated every five years for the county to remain eligible for grant and disaster recovery funds.  The purpose of the plan is to identify known hazards in the community and minimize their potential impacts prior to that type of event happening.

Organizations participating in the all-hazard mitigation plan include Sibley County, City of Arlington, City of Gaylord, City of Gibbon, City of Green Isle, City of Henderson, City of New Auburn, City of Winthrop, Sibley East Schools, GFW Schools, Sibley County Fire Chiefs Association, Gaylord Ambulance, Benco Electric and Renville-Sibley Co-op.

While updating the plan, Sibley County identified 12 existing hazards: tornadoes, floods, severe summer storms, severe winter storms, extreme temperatures, drought, wildfires, landslides, fire, infectious disease, hazardous materials, water supply contamination and terrorism; and one new hazard, a FEMA requirement, climate change.
