Mertle Mathews, 89, Glencoe

Mertle Ruth Alice Mathews, age 89, of Glencoe, passed away at the Glencoe Regional Health Service Long Term Care on Friday, Aug. 15.
Funeral services will be held at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23. Pastor Daniel Welch will officiate.
The pianist will be Dawn Wolter. Soloist Danielle Mathews will sing “The Rose” and “Amazing Grace.”
Congregational hymns will be  “On Eagle’s Wings” and “My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less.”
Honorary casket bearers will be Mertle’s granddaughters and great-grandchildren.
Casket bearers will be Mertle’s grandsons ~ Sheldon Mathews, Nick Mathews, Jamie Mathews, Dakota Mathews Schmidt, Grant Henkelmann, Dustin Henkelmann and Riley Messner.
Interment will follow at First Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Glencoe.  
Mertle Ruth Alice Mathews was born in Glencoe on May 29, 1925.  She was the daughter of Adolph and Minnie (Dummer) Pinske. Mertle was baptized on June 28, 1925, by Rev. E. Kolbe at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe and was later confirmed in 1938, by Rev. K. Plocher at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Litchfield.  She attended country school in both Litchfield and Glencoe.
On Dec. 26, 1943, Mertle was united in marriage to Eldor Mathews by Rev. Streufert at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe.  The couple made their home in Glencoe and they were blessed with eight children, Dottie, Larry, Lynn, Dean, Carol, Jeannie, Julie and Sherry.    
Mertle was a true farm wife and mother.  She loved the animals and took good care of them, but her favorite were her dogs. Through the years she always had a dog and her most loyal friend was her dog, Buddy. Mertle loved the outdoors and could be found mowing lawn often in the summer and any other activity that would perfect her lawn.  She enjoyed old time music and her family was very important to her, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Myrtle is survived by her children, Dottie Minor of Winthrop, Larry (Jan) Mathews of Green Isle, Lynn Schmerbauch of Gaylord, Jeannie Mathews Schmidt of Owatonna, Julie (Scott) Tuchenhagen of Winthrop, and Sherry (Butch) Henkelmann of Glencoe; daughter-in-law, Kathy Mathews of Glencoe; son-in-law, Milo Muchow of Gaylord; grandchildren, Brenda (Les) Meyer, Kari Rose, Shelley (Paul) Rohde, Sheldon (Michelle) Mathews, Tammy (Dave) Pikal, Tera (Trent) Messner, Britany Schmerbauch, Nick Mathews (fiancé, Amber) and Danielle Mathews, Chad (Jen) Muchow, Jamie (Sophia) Mathews, Dakota Mathews Schmidt, Jalisa Mathews Schmidt, Grant (Mandy) Henkelmann, Kim Henkelmann, Dustin (Ashley) Henkelmann, Meshawn (Brandon) Flowers and Melissa Cochraine; great-grandchildren, Brandon Meyer, Brady Meyer, Brock Meyer, Kami Mathews, Megan Mathews, Brandi Pikal, Lance Messner (friend, Kaylee), Riley Messner, Brody Messner, Amanda Guzman, Harley Guzman, Sawyer Raffella Mathews, Asher Raffella Mathews, Jasen Henkelmann, Tony Henkelmann, Everett Muchow, Taytem Muchow, Haley Wise, Peyton White, Parker White and Gracie Cochraine; sibling, Gert Coulter; brother-in-law, Norman Mathews of Glencoe; and sisters-in-law, Anna Mathews of Glencoe, Ruth Mathews of Glencoe.
Mertle is preceded in death by her husband, Eldor Mathews; parents, Adolph and Minnie Pinske; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Reinhold and Pauline Mathews; children, Dean Mathews and Carol Muchow; grandchildren, Ricky Sons and Stacie Steen; great-grandchildren, Briana Pikal and Benjamin Pikal; daughter-in-law, Linda Mathews; sons-in-law, Jim Minor and Al Schmerbauch; siblings, Herb (Liz) Pinske, Alvin Pinske, Gordon (Margaret) Pinske, Lorna (Clarence) Guetzkow and Ole (Ev) Ernst; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Walter Coulter, Lorna (Carl) Ehrke, Orville (Gloria) Mathews, Raymond (Willie) Mathews, Marvin (Selma) Mathews, Alice (Lawrence) Debner, Dorie Mathews, Hillard (Elizabeth) Mathews, Erwin Mathews and Earl Mathews.
The family invites everyone to the luncheon at the church social hall immediately following the committal service.
