The first in a series of three informational public meetings on the proposed Sibley East $43 million building bond referendum was held at the Green Isle Community Room on Wednesday night, Oct. 8.
Superintendent Jim Amsden presented a detailed history of the 2014 Task Force and how it originated with telephone calls to the mayors of the three communities. He also explained the five final options that the Task Force considered. Superintendent Amsden said the Task Force considered anywhere from 18 to 20 options overall. In addition, Superintendent Amsden presented the results from a survey taken after a $40 million referendum failed in May of 2011.
The least expensive of the five final options was to upgrade the mechanical air systems at both school sites for approximately $20 million.
A second option was to upgrade the mechanical air systems along with deferred maintenance for approximately $32 million.
A third option was to construct a new PreK-12 school at one site for approximately $45 million.
A fourth option was to construct two new schools for approximately $49-plus million.
A fifth option, which was later recommended by the Task Force and approved by the School Board, included the construction of a new elementary building in Gaylord and a renovated high school with additions in Arlington for approximately $43 million.
