Duane Hebert of Novel Energy Solutions presented the Sibley County Board with some options for investing in solar energy during its regular meeting on Tuesday morning, Feb. 24.

In 2014, Minnesota Community Solar invited Sibley County to invest in the community solar garden that will be located in Gaylord.  The County Commissioners were concerned about the large capital outlay required to invest in Minnesota Community Solar.  Hebert stated that new models of pay-as-you-go financing are becoming the preferred way to finance solar panels.  Novel Energy Solutions arranges ownership and financing and takes advantage of federal tax credits and incentives to cover startup costs.  With Novel Energy Solutions, subscribers begin seeing a payback right away.  During the first 15 years of subscription, the county would see 10 to 15 percent electric savings. In 15 years after the startup costs are paid the county would take on full ownership of the solar panels and see a 100 percent savings. That would be 15 years of 100 percent savings based on a 30- year system life.
