Sibley County will celebrate the 100th anniversary of courthouse

2016-06-23

In 1887, an effort began to move the county seat from Henderson to Gaylord.

In 1895, both Arlington and Gaylord were in competition for the honor. The case was taken up by the Minnesota Supreme Court and in 1897 Arlington was given the right of way. Then, after a special election, Henderson was allowed to remain the county seat.

In September 1915, after another special election, Gaylord won by a small margin and a victory celebration was  held Oct. 2, 1915.

In honor of this event in 1916 and the 100-year anniversary of the courthouse building, the Sibley County Board of Commissioners will be hosting a 100-Year Courthouse Social at the courthouse in Gaylord from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 12.
