Walter R. Erickson, age 95, of Arlington, died at the Sibley Medical Center in Arlington on Wednesday, April 18.
Funeral services were held at the Arlington United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 24. Rev. Wayne Swanson officiated.
Visitation was held at the church from 11 a.m. until the service time on Tuesday, April 24.
A graveside service will be held at Harris Cemetery in Grand Rapids at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 26.
Walter Richard Erickson was born to Chris and Anna (Leidenberg) Erickson in Grand Rapids on June 1, 1916. He was a 1934 graduate of the Grand Rapids High School and went on to graduate from the University of Minnesota’s Department of Agriculture.
Walter was united in marriage to Enid Demarais in Bovey on June 21, 1941.
After their marriage they lived in Milaca, where Walter was an agriculture teacher. They soon moved to Little Falls, where Walter worked for the Farm Security Administration. The family then moved to Watertown, where Walter resumed teaching agriculture. Walter continued to teach agriculture, one year at Floodwood, and one year at Grand Rapids. In 1945, Walter started the Arrowhead Canning Company. In 1965, the family moved to Arlington. Walter started working as a salesman for Blenda Life and drove special needs children to Minneapolis for schooling. Walter and Enid spent their winters in Las Vegas from 1979 until Enid’s death on Sept. 1, 1994. Through Walter’s sister, Mildred, he met Isora Iverson, and they were married on Oct. 7, 1995. They also spent their winters in Las Vegas, and lived in Minneapolis, Chisago City, Burnsville, Apple Valley, and Prior Lake. Isora passed away on June 27, 2008.
Walter had always enjoyed creative writing, contributing to the Apple Valley Villa Informer, and the McKenna Crossing monthly newsletters. He was also working on his memoirs, and sent out special Christmas letters each year.
Walter is survived by his children, Estid (Vern) Herting of Andover, Christopher (Barbara) Erickson of North Las Vegas Nev., Obbie (Gary) Harvieux of Woodbury, W. Roland Erickson of Hibbing, Leland (Laurinda) Erickson of Longview Texas, Mark (Jill) Erickson of Marshall, and Curtiss (Marge) Erickson of Arlington; 21 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Enid and Isora; daughter, Orpha Lee; daughter-in-law, Dawn, four brothers; and four sisters.
Kolden Funeral Home of Arlington handled the arrangements.
