Sibley County is taking a chance at possibly saving money by voting to spend money to test a highway surface that is having problems.
Public Works Director Tim Becker, during a meeting on Tuesday morning, April 8, told the board of commissioners that the existing pavement on CSAH 12 from CR 116 to CSAH 6 is failing and requires repairs.
American Engineering Testing will determine the best repair solution for the project. Repair work will investigate cold in place recycle, full depth reclamation and a simple mill and overlay.
Becker said there is a big pothole problem on 1.3 miles of pavement because the bituminous is stripping away from the aggregate. It is not known if the stripping problem is deeper than at the top level.
“American Engineering would drill through the roadway to analyze the core in layers,” said Becker. “This will determine if we need to do cold in place recycling or pave over the top layer. Without doing the core drilling, we really don’t know how to fix it properly. If we do the overlay and the problem continues to get worse, we will have deeper pot holes than we have now.”
