The visiting Sibley East varsity football team rallied to the end, but came up short and lost to Belle Plaine 28-26 during the opening round of the Section 3AAA Football Playoffs on Tuesday night, Oct. 21.
Sibley East, which trailed 28-20 late in the game, drove down the field and scored on a 2-yard run by senior running back Lukas Bullert. The key play in the drive was a 41-yard hook-and-ladder play from freshman quarterback Gavin Bates to Bullert to freshman running back Kevin  Durham.
The Tigers stopped Bullert on the two-point conversion run with two minutes left in the game and won 28-26.
Belle Plaine, on its first possession of the game, marched down field and scored on a 9-yard run by junior quarterback Luke Narveson. Junior Reuben Baltierez added the extra point kick as the Tigers jumped out to a 7-0 lead with 5:08 remaining in the first quarter.
The Wolverines, on a short field, countered with a touchdown one quarter later. Sibley East drove 45 yards before sophomore Brody Bates hit paydirt on a 4-yard run. Gavin Bates was sacked on the two-point conversion play as the Wolverines climbed within 7-6 with 4:29 left in the second quarter.
