The Green Isle City Council, during its regular meeting on Tuesday night, Sept. 9, heard an update on the Green Isle Community School (GICS) from Director Mary Menne.
GICS, according to Menne, has new lofts in the kindergarten and first grade classrooms this year. In addition, the pre-school is now officially licensed as a daycare.
Menne then reported that the current enrollment is less  at 55 students this year rather than the anticipated 68.
She also said there are 107 kids in grades K-6 who live in Green Isle and GICS “has 17 of them.”
While enrollment is better than last year, Menne said GICS cannot financially sustain its program during the long-term unless numbers increase.
City Council member Todd Berg said the community needs “to get the kids who live in Green Isle to go here.”
Menne said GISC is “looking for ways” to attract more students. The staff, she said, went door knocking and distributed DVDs and mailed out postcards this summer. The school, she added, has tried “a lot of different marketing ideas.”
