Sibley East School District Attorney Tony Nerud led the discussion on guidelines for transgender students at the School Board meeting on Monday night, July 18.

Nerud stated that there are various policies provided from the Minnesota School Board and the National School Board that provide a “basis on how to handle unfair or unequal treatment of any student.” Nerud felt that right now districts should not be creating any more policies and didn’t know “why this issue was being brought up.”

School Board member Nathan Kranz asked if it was ruled on in the courts would they have to do something at that time.
Nerud stated yes, but “why try to find a solution to a problem you don’t have.”  Nerud felt that the best thing to do when there is a problem is talk to the kids and parents first.
