Rural Arlington resident and local businessman Steve Gillaspie, a decorated U.S. Army Ranger Vietnam combat veteran, established Veterans on the Water two years ago.

Gillaspie, who has a Purple Heart and two medals of valor, came up with the idea of free fishing trips after he recognized many veterans gave up on the sport due to their age or physical disabilities.

Gillaspie wanted to offer veterans of all ages and physical disabilities a free fishing experience filled with fun, outdoor  enjoyment, laughter and a shared brotherhood.

The project started on a small scale in 2015 when Gillaspie bought a little pontoon and took a few veterans fishing.
