Former Sibley East standout Gavin Bates is a member of the varsity men’s basketball team at Saint John’s University in Collegeville.
The Johnnies, who start practice next week, are currently ranked 25th in Division III preseason polls. Bates will play guard in St. John’s three-guard system.
Bates was a four-year basketball starter at Sibley East where he surpassed 1,000 career points and set the single game scoring record.

He is the son of Jason and Rhonda Bates, Gaylord. He is also the grandson of Gordon and Sherry Bates, Green Isle, and Duane Woehler and the late Lois Woehler, Gaylord.
