The visiting Sibley East varsity boys basketball team, behind the scoring of senior Gavin Bates, opened its season with a 72-65 win over Nicollet in non-conference action on Friday night, Dec. 1.

Bates, who hooped 24 points in the first half, finished the night with 35 points. Senior Austin Weckwerth also hit double figures with 12 points. Seniors Connor Deis and Jacob Willmsen scored eight and seven points respectively. Seniors Holden Lindquist, Lucas Chavez and Alex Sell, junior Kameron In and sophomore Lucas Dose added two points each.

The Wolverines hit 19 of 45 shots from two-point range for 44 percent and seven of 14 long bombs for 50 percent. Sibley East also converted 13 of 22 attempts from the foul line for 59 percent.
