Gaylord man shot and killed by police officer in St. James

A Gaylord man was shot and killed by a police officer at a convenience store in St. James on Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 31.


The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) identified the man as 20-year-old Gilberto Salas.


On late Wednesday afternoon, deputies from the Nicollet County Sheriff’s Department spotted a vehicle in Lafayette that had earlier been reported stolen in New Ulm, according to the BCA. A pursuit ensued that included deputies with the Nicollet, Blue Earth and Brown County sheriff’s departments, the New Ulm and North Mankato police departments and the Minnesota State Patrol. Salas was eventually identified as the driver and the pursuit was called off for safety reasons.
