The Sibley County Commissioners, during their recent regular meeting, voted 4-1 to approve licensed practical nurse (LPN) Julie Miller’s phased retirement beginning on March 23 and filling the hours she leaves behind with a community health worker.

According to Public Health and Human Services Director John Glisczinski, Miller is the person who goes out and visits newborn babies. He stated that, ideally, he would like to hire a registered nurse (RN) to fill Miller’s vacancy, but stated that they are having a hard time finding an RN.  He stated that it is “more realistic to hire a community health worker.”   He said that community health workers are more flexible and that LPNs “are kind of a dying breed.”  Glisczinski stated that it would not be his recommendation to hire another LPN as it would limit PHHS’s ability to bill for certain services.

County Commissioner Bobbie Harder voiced concerns over filling the position with a .5 full time equivalent (FTE) position.
