The Sibley County Board, at its regular meeting on Tuesday morning, July 9,  followed a recommendation by the Planning and Zoning Commission and approved ordinance amendment #132 to allow accessory dwellings as a conditional use in residential and agricultural areas.

An accessory dwelling is defined as a separate dwelling constructed on an undivided lot for the sole use by the occupants of the principal building, including their immediate relatives by marriage, blood, or adoption. The definition does not allow units to be used for commercial or rental purposes. The type of dwelling could be attached to the principal structure or  within a detached structure. Accessory dwellings would be allowed as a conditional use in the districts that extra farm dwellings and temporary dwellings are currently an allowable conditional use.
