American Education Banquet again attracts over 400 people

Over 400 students and adults attended the second annual Sibley East American Education Banquet at the Arlington Community Center on Monday night, Nov. 22.

The highlight of the evening was the induction of three individuals into the Sibley East Wall of Fame. The three individuals included Mike Noack, Dan Vos and Lisa McGonigle.

These three individuals were nominated based on their commitment to education through their lifetime and/or graduated from a high school in the school district and used that education as a springboard to success.

Noack
Noack is a 1963 graduate of the Arlington-Green Isle High School where he was the student council president, football captain, yearbook editor, lettermen’s club president, national honor society member and co-salutatorian of the class.

Noack entered St. John’s University to study Natural Science and was later accepted into the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry  where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree in June of 1969.
He then enlisted in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant and was stationed at the Naval Training Center in San Diego until 1971.

Following his release from active duty, Noack returned to Arlington to start a dental practice.
Since then, he has been a stalwart in the community.

Noack has served on the Arlington Hospital Board, Arlington City Council, Arlington Economic Development Authority and Arlington Historical Society. He has also been active in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Arlington Lions Club and various other community organizations.

Vos
Vos was a 1967 graduate of the Arlington-Green Isle High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy Seabees and spent a year in Vietnam.

After his discharge from the Seabees, he completed a construction technology program at Anoka Vocational Technical Center.

In 1973, he resumed work with his father and brothers in the family construction business which is now in its 51st year with the third generation actively involved.

Vos has been a civic leader in Green Isle for decades. He is past president of the Green Isle Lions Club, past commander of the Green Isle American Legion and has participated in military funerals for 38 years.

Vos has served on the Green Isle City Council and is currently the chairperson of the Green Isle EDA. In addition, he is a member of the Knights of Columbus and was involved in the opening of the Green Isle Community School.

McGonigle
McGonigle graduated from the Gaylord High School in 1985. She also graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead with a degree in communications in 1989.

McGonigle’s first TV job was at KMOT-TV in Minot, N.D., where she worked for 18 months as a reporter, anchor, producer, editor and graphics operator.

She then moved to Yakima, Wash., and worked for 2 1/2 years as an executive producer, producer and anchor at KIMA-TV. Then it was six months as the news director at KEPR-TV in Pasco, Wash.

In 1994, McGonigle gave up a full-time job and jumped at the opportunity to work as a part-time newswriter at KING-TV in Seattle. Within three months, she was producing the weekend newscast before moving into the producer’s spot for the weekday 11 p.m. newscast.

Since 1999, McGonigle has been the producer for the 10 p.m. newscast at WLS-TV in Chicago, one of the largest and most competitive markets in the broadcast industry.

In addition, she has also served as an adjunct faculty member of the television department at Columbia College in Chicago.

Five Awards
Five awards were presented to current and former staff and community members.
Molly Raske - Teacher of the Year Award.
Dan Hislop - Outstanding Retiree Award.
Rhonda Stien - Paraprofessional of the Year Award.
Joan Budahn - Support Person of the Year Award.
Joe Schwirtz - Friend of Education Award.

Students Honored
Forty-eight students were honored during the event. The students were nominated by teachers based on their academics, character and integrity.

“We have hundreds more students with these same traits,” said Superintendent Steve Jones.

The elementary students who were honored included fourth graders Julia Cohrs,  Salvador Elias, Breanna Fahning, Jose Felipe and Jordan Wlasiuk; fifth graders Kristian Gallegos, Samuel Kistner, Katrina Wolter and Faith Young; and sixth graders Leah Serbus, Christopher Johnson and Sierra Suedbeck.

The junior high students who were honored consisted of seventh graders Mitchell Mathews, Natalie Mesker, Alyssa Weber and Sherry Wuetherich; eighth graders Vanesa Aguilera, Jonah Butler, Isaac Elseth, Justin Korson, Kelli Martens, Ashley Mercier and Breann Walsh; and freshmen Andrea Geib, Alicia Kranz, Kimberly Kurtzweg and Pakou Vue.

The senior high students who were honored included sophomores Nicolas Bruss, Irene B. Gonzalez, Emily Kloeckl, Briana Reierson, Morgan Setterman and Jordan Thomes; juniors Jessica Eibs, Vinzenz Karl, Hannah Larson, Caleb Ling, Makenzie Petzel, Tanner Walsh and Jenna White; and seniors Shannon Bjorklund, Ilda Gonzalez, Seth Grabow, Brianna Hahn, Megan Heibel, Kelsey Sunvold, Paige Swenson and Andrew Thies.

Staff Honored
Many staff were also recognized for their years of service to Sibley East. They included Chad Bachman, Carrie Bartlette, Carol Dammann, Mary Doyscher, Doug Flieth, Randy Franke, Heidi Gasow, Steve Harter, Susanne Larsen, Victoria Louwagie, Dan Meier, Amy Sell, Jeana Wibstad, Lyle Wiest and Elizabeth Zieman (ten years each); RaNae Drexler, Greg Elseth, Shar Husfeldt, Soraida Palacios, Kathy Ringo and Rod Tollefson (15 years each); Gary Burdorf, Terry Pilacins-ski, Carrie Pioske and Randy Walsh (20 years each); Mari Lu Martens, Stacy Pauly and Regina Ploeger (25 years each); and Deniece Smith (30 years).

Jones, who was excited about the large turnout, said the banquet allowed Sibley East to honor outstanding students, recognize staff members who excel at what they do on a daily basis and publicly thank community members who continually give back to education at Sibley East.
