The visiting Sibley East varsity football team scored the first touchdown and then lost to Belle Plaine 42-6 in Minnesota River Conference action on Friday night, Sept. 5.
The Wolverines, after the opening kickoff, marched about 80 yards and scored their first and only touchdown of the game. The score came on a 1-yard plunge by sophomore Brody Bates.
The extra point kick was wide right as Sibley East had to settle for a 6-0 lead with 4:40 left in the first quarter.
Belle Plaine capitalized on three Sibley East turnovers and built a 28-6 lead at halftime.
The Tigers added two more touchdowns, one on a punt return, in the third quarter and cruised to a 42-6 victory.
“A loss is a loss,” said Sibley East head coach Chuck Hartman.  “We have never started 0-2 since I have been here so this is a new spot for us.  We need to dig ourselves out and understand that there is still a lot of season to go, including the playoffs which is when you really want to be playing your best ball.  But still, being 0-2 is not a good place to be and we have put ourselves there by turning the ball over and through some breakdowns on defense in key situations.”
