SE falls to Mayer Lutheran 19-16

The visiting Sibley East varsity football team lost to Mayer Lutheran 19-16 in Minnesota River Conference action on Friday night, Oct. 10.
The Crusaders scored first on an 8-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Jack Chmielewski to senior Taylor Otterstatter. Chmielewski also ran for the two-point conversion as Mayer Lutheran jumped out to an 8-0 lead with 6:47 left in the first quarter.
A fumble recovery and run by sophomore Scott Holm-quist set up the first Sibley East touchdown less than four minutes later.
The Wolverines, on a short field, marched 23 yards before sophomore Brody Bates scored on a 2-yard run. Freshman Kevin Durham ran for the two-point conversion as Sibley East knotted the game at 8-8 with three minutes remaining in the first frame.
Holmquist came up with another big play when he intercepted a Mayer Lutheran pass deep in Sibley East territory during the second quarter.
A fumble recovery by sophomore Tim Otto set up the next Sibley East touchdown in the third quarter.
The Wolverines, on another short field, scored when senior Lukas Bullert hit paydirt on an 11-yard run. Bullert also ran for the two-point conversion as Sibley East pulled ahead 16-8 with 8:08 left in the third quarter.
